Backhanded compliments are too common in society’s hierarchical rivalry. Everyone is struggling, fighting to be number one, to be the top dog. Our societal interactions and relationships are formed around the concept of – Maximise me, minimise them. Instead of working hard to be the best, a web of deceit cocoons each troubled self-centred soul. I have come to believe the compliments we receive are hollow and empty, essentially meaningless. You get the odd ‘friend‘ that will pay you an off handed compliment, but 60 seconds later that false hope is shattered by another devastating blow leaving you flailing to maintain balance while your ‘friend’ towers over you for everyone to see.
Vanquished thoughts tear at my mind
Downtrodden and disheartened.
I wonder lost in a marsh of anguish,
Searching, ever seeking
Constantly running, hiding, changing.
Yet always finding the pit of despair
Grim outcomes, bashing and beating
leaving me miserable and desolate.
But there is always just one star shining
drawing me in, keeping me hopeful
yet downcast, beaten, broken I remain!
Get out you pretentious animal,
all high-and-mighty in your domain;
Who are you, what are you?
Ostentatious , puffed up to display.
I am not subservient to you,
I will not submit under arrogance;
Submission leads to dominance,
I will not fall under your sovereignty.
Pursue meek and mild,
they rise humble and modest;
A beacon of hope,
In a world of iniquitous delusion.
Our life is finite with boundaries at birth and death. We have no means to tell when death will come to take us home. We only have a certain prescribed amount of time, yet I waste it on loathsome souls who deteriorate and rot me from the inside out. They are the workers of evil, societies demons. They plant dreams of an ‘acceptable’ life. Who do I need to appear to be acceptable to, most certainly not any of you!
The loathsome souls you call family, friends and maybe even lovers are breaking you down block by block. No matter where you go, what you do, you are analysed. You are marked on a scale of adequate to inadequate according to societies standards and are influenced as such. You grow up with what your parents instil in you. What is instilled in you? Covetousness, pride, greed and lust. You will deny this I know. I do most days, but do you get upset when you see adverts covered with sexual innuendos, when you look for a job what is the first thing you look at – salary obviously. When last were you truly happy for a friend when they just bought something you would have liked. We have depravity ingrained in us, we have desires to constantly improve ourselves rather than improve others.
